Fire,Whirlwind, Flood

(see1Kings 19:)

A few years ago I was obsessed with trying to make my new house a home. Painting , decorating and furnishing it.  I was just so excited at finally being able to call a place my own, not rented or shared.
At the  time it was BC(before Christ) so I was simply focused on working hard and achieving my goals. I wanted the prescribed lifestyle that the “western materialistic society” said I should have at all cost
I failed to learn the lessons of sacrifice, diligence, saving, delayed gratification. I am ashamed to say I bought into the buy now pay later philosophy, However that is another topic for another blog.

One night I put my only daughter who was 3 at the time and my newborn niece to bed early. My husband and I fell asleep watching tv on the sofa . Instead of going upstairs to bed .
I was awakened from my slumber by a strange noise and a bright flashing light seeping through my eyelids and piercing my unconscious state.  I fluttered my eyelids open to a completely dark room.  We had set the tv on sleep mode to switch off at night. All seemed well as I glanced around so I closed my eyelids again. Almost immediately the strange light returned. I bolted upright rubbing the sleep from my eyes. The leads to my fish tank were ablaze and the hungry flames were quickly climbing up my wall and spreading out across the ceiling. I elbowed my husband to wake him. At first he was disoriented and confused .

I had purchased a fire extinguisher as a result of having watched an episode of Oprah.

So I told him where to get it and he was able to retrieve it thereby saving not just four lives but our future children. Now that is a sobering thought.
A week, Prior to this occasion we had also had a small flood from a burst pipe in the upstairs bedroom directly above us ( caused by a careless labourer replacing a

rotten floor board and boring a nail in the pipe beneath)Unbeknownst to us water had seeped in to the fishtank’s leads

Lessons learned in the spiritual, though Satan intended to wipe us out  that night God used those events to draw us to him and recognise the fragility

of life and called our attention to Our Creator. It was after this and a whirlwind event and two more years that I will describe another time that

I was able like Elijah to hear the Lord’s still small voice

1 Kings 19:11-13
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by,

and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks

before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12   And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13   And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood

in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

As the manageress of my home it is up to me to make sure that I ‘m reasonably prepared for emergencies, whenever the matter arises. Below are  some of the things I’ve done in my home.

•    Placed a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
•    Put together a first aid kit.
•    Placed emergency phone numbers on Refridgerator.
•    Have several homemade dinners in the freezer for when we  come home late from an activity or those dreaded but inevitable  times when we are down with the flu
•    Kept up on the laundry, ironing and mending so that my family has the clothes they need when they need them.
•    Have a generous supply of shampoo and soap so that no one is caught in the shower without them.
I don’t think that being prepared means that you need to overload on stocks of toilet paper enough to fill an aisle at ASDA’s (although having a good supply in the bathroom can be very important!). It’s more a case of understanding the needs of your family and then making sure that you have the essentials.

Here is a poem I wrote and made into a video that contains the above  text from 1Kings, so enjoy
